Research:
My current interests are focused towards the development and application of novel Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS) methodologies in the fields of medical and biomedical research. These areas of interest include:

» The study of the evolution of stroke in humans with diffusion and perfusion weighted echoplanar MRI and the mathematical modelling of these parameters to predict final infarct volume. In collaboration with the researchers at the Queensland Brian Institute, I am also involved in the development of new MRI contrast agents to enable in vivoimaging of cells undergoing apoptosis.
» Longitudinal MR study of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with spectroscopic techniques to access metabolic function, and 3D volumetric MRI techniques in conjunction with neuropsychological assessment to monitor disease progression. In addition, the investigation of cerebral perfusion abnormalities and white matter tract degeneration using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in the brains of patients with probable AD. Similar methods are also being applied to investigate the extent of neuronal damage in patients with traumatic brain injury.
» Studying the loss in connectivity within the brain using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in patients with psychosis.
» The investigation of ventricular wall mechanics in the human heart utilising tagged MRI sequences and strain analysis techniques. The aim of this work is to develop non-invasive methods of monitoring cardiac function.
» Investigation of myocardial viability using first pass and delay contrast enhancement using cardiac perfusion MRI.
» Development of perfusion based MRI methods to detect drug receptor sites within the brain.
