Andrew Whittaker has worked in the field of polymer physical chemistry and magnetic resonance since 1981. The main research themes of his group are Polymers for Photolithography, and Polymeric Biomaterials. Underpinning this are strengths in specific aspects of polymer physical chemistry and strong interests in solid-state NMR and NMR microimaging. Andrew is very active in the polymer community, being past Chair of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Polymer Division, Chair-Elect of the Pacific Polymer Federation and National Representative of the IUPAC Macromolecular Division, and the International Association for Radiation Research. He serves on a number of national committee. Currently his research group numbers around 35 staff and students. The chemical laboratories of Prof Whittaker are located in the AIBN building, however the group is administered by the Centre for Magnetic Resonance.

Research Interests:
The main research themes of the Whittaker Group are Polymers for Photolithography, Polymeric Biomaterials and Advance NMR Methods for Materials. In the field of photolithography, a group of eight scientists work on the synthesis of the next generation polymeric resists and nanoparticles for use in aqueous immersion fluids. This work, funded by the Australian Research Council, Sematech and Intel, relies on a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between structural parameters and end-use properties. The group collaborates closely with scientists in Austin, TX, and in Portland Oregon on these projects. In the field of Biomaterials, the group has many activities focussed around the recently-funded Smart State National International Research Alliance grant, IBRA, the International Biomaterials Research Alliance. This program aims to bring the latest chemical advances in the clinical environment, with four main target applications, namely artificial arteries, MRI imaging agents, dental bone restoratives and tissue scaffolds for regeneration of the cornea. Currently, 16 members of the group work in this area. Finally, the group aims to develop methodologies to apply modern MR techniques to answer fundamental questions of structure, dynamics and function of advanced materials. These include hyperpolarized xenon NMR, Rheo-NMR and NMR microscopy.
