Magnetic
Resonance Technology
One of the challenges for any distance based learning
is ensuring that students don’t feel isolated. The key to achieving
this is the demonstration of a personal interest in each student,
aiding them through the enrolment process, welcoming them to the program
and ensuring that any administrative issues are promptly and appropriately
handled. The University of Queensland team communicates with each
student individually about course selection and gives academic advice
about directions most appropriate to the student’s skills and
aspirations. We endeavour to have some communication with each student
during each semester, and make it clear that our e-mail addresses
are always open to any query, concern or complaint. As part of the
overall teaching, e-mail forms an integral part of the teaching of
each subject, and the subject coordinators prepare tutorial questions
and monitor the students’ responses. This mechanism also allows
the students to interact with each other, as they share their understanding
of the material. The tutors are there to intervene with any misunderstandings
that may become evident.
The Graduate Certificate courses are centred on the physics and
technology surrounding magnetic resonance, but the program has now
matured to include courses that investigate the applications, both
to clinical and physiological studies. The teaching staff numbers
eleven, made up of physicists, engineers, clinicians, a radiographer
and a psychologist. One of the strengths of the program is the multidisciplinary
nature of the program and the cooperation with which the staff have
worked. As recognition of further needs in the radiology industry,
we have negotiated with the Graduate School of Management, and now
allow students to include up to two management courses in their study
program. These include topics in Accounting, Organisational Behaviour
and Human Resource Management.
The quality of the teaching material has been confirmed
by the award from the Australian Publishers Association – Best
Tertiary Teaching Package – 2001.
The programs are eligible for AIR CPD points accrual.
