PhD Studentships

Two PhD Scholarships in Biomaterials Science

Scientists within the AIBN have recently gained funding under the Queensland State Government International Research Alliance Program. The funding allows the establishment of the International Biomaterials Research Alliance (IBRA) consisting of members with the AIBN, the Centre for Magnetic Resonance, the School of Dentistry, the Royal Brisbane Hospital, and the Queensland Eye Institute. International partners include world-leading scientists from the University of California at Santa Barbara (Hawker), Washington University at St. Louis (Wooley), the University of Warwick (Haddleton) and the University of Nottingham (Howdle).

The three year program of research is targeting four specific clinical applications, namely polymeric biomaterials for dental bone repair, vascular regeneration, vision and medical imaging agents. The positions will be based within the AIBN and other organisational units within UQ listed above, and will involve extensive collaboration with our international partners.

The PhD students (2) will be working at the interface between materials science and the biomedical applications mentioned above. Your field of study will be centred on the synthesis of biomaterials, and the application of these materials in the specific fields mentioned above. This program offers an outstanding opportunity to gain world-leading training in this most important scientific field. They should possess a BSc (Hons) in one of the fields of polymer chemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, medical physics or related fields. Experience in synthetic chemistry would be an advantage.

PhD and Honours Projects

The Polymer Group offers exciting PhD and Honours projects in a number of areas of polymer chemistry and biomaterials science. A listing of available projects can be seen here.

Unfortunately the group cannot generally offer financial support to students, although top-ups for scholarship holders are occassionally provided. Interested PhD candidates are directed to details of the general UQ scholarships and financial assistance.

Honours students are generally enrolled through the School of Molecular and Microbial Sciences.

Cotutelles with French Universities

The University of Queensland is one of 10 Australian universities participating in an international initiative allowing PhD students to study at both an Australian and a French university. A Cotutelle de Thèse can be undertaken between participating French universities and the University of Queensland, and involves the student spending at least 12 months at each institution. The Polymer Group has excellent links with the Laboratoire des Matériaux Macromoléculaires at INSA in Lyon, and wishes to encourage joint PhD projects with this excellent group. However, enquiries from students wishing to study at other universities in France are also welcome. Details of the cotutelle scheme can be found on the HUPP web page.

Visiting Scientists

The Polymer Group welcomes enquiries from scientists wishing to spend a period of research time in our laboratories. We have welcomed over recent years visitors from the USA, France, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand, Korea and Brazil into our laboratories. The Polymer Group has outstanding research facilities and provides a welcoming atmsophere to our visitors.
